According to the folks over at Koei Tecmo, 2025 is the Year of the Ninja, and really, who can argue with them? Both Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi have made and will make comebacks this year in the form of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, respectively. Both games got us thinking here at the Nintendojo offices how awesome it is to see this resurgence of 2D ninja action-platformers; it also got us thinking how intrinsically tied to the history of the industry ninja games of this ilk have been. In particular during the 8 and 16-bit eras when the likes of Ninja Gaiden, Strider, Shinobi, and others were leaving their mark on the minds and hearts of players all over the world.

Celebrating ninja games is, in effect, to celebrate the history of console gaming as a whole. So, in an effort to do that, Nintendojo will be looking at the recent slate of ninja game offerings with a review of Ninja Gaiden: Radebound, followed by other articles, reviews, and retrospectives in the coming weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for the angry Ryu Hayabusa eyes in the masthead above to pop up on these articles to know that it’s part of our Year of the Ninja celebrations. And in the meanwhile, why not tell us about your favorite ninja games down in the comments and on social media?
