Arcades, once upon a time, were a major place of congregation for gamers of all stripes. Sega has a long and storied history as an arcade game developer and one very beloved title the studio was responsible for was Star Wars Arcade. Released in 1993, Star Wars Arcade ran on Sega’s Model 1 arcade hardware and really pushed 3D gaming when it was released. It was a highly entertaining recreation of the aerial battles between X-Wings and TIE Fighters that Star Wars is famous for, but it’s only ever been ported to a home console on Sega’s failed 32X expansion for Sega Genesis. Note that I didn’t say it was ported well.
In any event, developer M2 and Sega are toying with the idea of reviving Star Wars Arcade as part of the Sega Ages line. M2 (who Nintendo fans might remember for their previous work on the Sega 3D Classics line for 3DS) is a master at recreating and freshening up classic video games for modern consoles and recently got to know the Model 1 arcade board inside and out when they were working on bringing Virtua Racing to the Sega Ages line. Apparently, the intimate knowledge that M2 gained during this development process resulted in confidence that they could easily port Star Wars Arcade to Switch.
Sadly, Star Wars Arcade could possibly be a licensing problem away from never coming to Switch, but the possibility is tantalizing, to say the least. With rumblings of Jet Set Radio also possibly coming to Sega Ages, it’s clear that Sega is embracing its delightful back catalogue of games. Would you like to see Star Wars Arcade on Switch?
