Wii U in Short Supply in Japan

A better than expected Holiday season might be to blame.

While most of us might love Wii U for its fantastic library of games, the fact remains that the system has been a disappointment in terms of actual sales, especially when compared to its legendarily successful predecessor. Despite this, Japanese gamers are having an interesting problem: Wii U is surprisingly hard to come by right now.

Perhaps Nintendo reduced shipments to Japan due to lagging sales, or maybe the last few months have exceeded expectations, but regardless of the reason, many retailers are sold out of the system. Big online retailers like Tsutaya and Amazon are currently back-ordered while some other stores are completely sold out.

While this might be an indication of an increased interest in Wii U, it ultimately is somewhat unfortunate. Not only is Nintendo perhaps losing out on some sales due to the supply issue, but it also means there are gamers out there missing out on the sheer awesomeness the console has to offer, and that’s the biggest shame. Hopefully more units will be hitting store shelves soon so our Japanese compatriots can join in on the fun.
