With Wii Sports Club less than a day away from release, many have been wondering why the inimitable franchise is only being offered as a downloadable title through the Wii U eShop. Well, wonder no more, as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata addressed that very issue at a recent financial meeting with investors. Iwata explained that with digital initiatives like Wii Sports Club, there is a desire on Nintendo’s part to “have wide flexibility in terms of their prices and ways to market them” in the hopes that a “wider range of consumers will appreciate these unprecedented offers.”
Iwata went on to further note that a title like Wii Sports Club is unique in that there are “players who will play it almost every day just as they did with its predecessor, ‘Wii Sports‘, while others will only play it when friends visit their home.” As a result, for Wii Sports Club Nintendo is offering a flexible rent of buy pricing model for the title. While many will appreciate this approach, some are quick to point out that the original Wii Sports was initially bundled as a pack-in game with every Wii, a move often credited for propelling the system to the unparalleled success it saw for so long. Iwata is fully aware of this, though, conceding that there is a “possibility that ‘Wii Sports Club‘ may become packaged software in the future”.
