“Better Together.”

For gamers that grew-up during the days of the SNES and Sega Genesis, the idea of cross-play is, quite frankly, kind of stunning. After all, in those days, Sega and Nintendo working together to promote games would have been unthinkable, let alone the idea of players being able to compete and play together across platforms. The unthinkable, however, has quickly become a part of the reality of today’s industry. In fact, Nintendo and Microsoft have seemingly embraced the concept so much so that they have released a trailer together for the Switch version of Minecraft.

For those following last week’s news regarding Fortnite, the trailer’s message of “Better Together” couldn’t be any clearer. Sony received quite a bit of negative backlash following E3 for their actions regarding the Switch version of Fortnite. Perhaps the release timing of this commercial is merely coincidental, but one can’t help but imagine that Nintendo and Microsoft cranked this out in just under a week’s time to take advantage of a misstep by their biggest competitor. If the message in the trailer doesn’t seem blatant enough, the two companies continued to publicly share the love on Twitter.

In the days of the Genesis, this was exactly the kind of PR move Sega would have made, and it’s pretty stunning to see Nintendo throwing down the gauntlet in such a bold fashion. If there’s one thing we’re quickly seeing with Switch, it’s that Nintendo is ready and willing to do things a lot differently this time around.
