The Goombas have suffered a number of ignominies over the years. They were the first enemy to get stomped beneath the boot of Mario, and, for nearly 30 years, little has changed. But now Mario finds himself plagued by a Goomba that simply cannot be stopped. A hacker by the name of pannenkoek2012 discovered that Super Mario 64 houses a single, unbeatable Goomba. As they try to defeat this enemy, the stompers have become the stumped.
The so-called “Mystery Goomba” was discovered when pannenkoek2012 noticed that a chain of Goombas in the final level of Super Mario 64 only contained two enemies, rather than the standard three. Using a number of hacks, he discovered a Goomba floating in space inside the level. That’s when he did what any other player would do: he tried to stomp that Goomba. When that didn’t work, he tried just about everything else, from throwing Bob-Ombs to throwing Luigi. Despite his best efforts, nothing has worked just yet. It appears that nothing can stop this engine of destruction. We’ve embedded a video of pannenkoek2012’s vain attempts below.
Of course, one can’t help but wonder if this is but the start of a brand-new Goomba uprising. If there’s one unbeatable Goomba out there, couldn’t there be more? Perhaps, after all these years of suffering defeat at the hands of the mustachioed plumber, a change is in the air. I, for one, welcome our new Goomba overlords.
