It’s been almost three years since writer Ian Flynn and company began the Shattered World story in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman, depending on your tastes), who had been working with Dr. Wily, basically destroyed his and Sonic’s reality, patching it back together into something similar to what existed before, but also quite different. Sonic and his friends have been fighting ever since to restore their world as they knew it. Archie Comics has put out word, however, that the battle will finally be winding down in the forthcoming Panic in the Sky storyline starting in Sonic the Hedgehog #284!

Kicking off in June, Panic in the Sky begins with Sonic and friends close to victory, only to have Dr. Robotnik launch a coordinated attack against the Blue Blur and his buddies, crippling their efforts. Sonic will have to struggle to overcome the defeat and find a way to restore his world, but Archie Comics sure isn’t making it clear if Sonic will succeed or not! The comic hasn’t been afraid to shake the status quo over the years, and anyone who reads Nintendojo knows that this writer is a big proponent of the series. Fans should be stoked to see this epic story finally heading toward its conclusion, but the real question that should be on any Sonic reader’s mind is: “What the heck is next?!”

Well, with Sonic’s 25th anniversary celebration underway this year, with the actual anniversary coming up in October, and a four part storyline kicking off in June… huh. Well look at that. The story wraps… right before October. What are the odds something huger than the conclusion to Shattered World is coming? This writer would say those odds are pretty high! Seriously, people, give Sonic a read; it’s one great little comic.
