Before Switch came out, Atlus announced their intent to bring their long running Shin Megami Tensei series to the hybrid console. However, considering the fact the franchise has seen numerous spin-offs, it was anybody’s guess what form this new entry would take. Now, we can confirm this new game will be the next main entry in the series.

Atlus continues to be light on specific details, but they did release a Japanese teaser trailer to make the announcement, so a few details can be gleaned. The most apparent and significant information is that it looks like this new entry will take place in a modern-like Japanese setting following an apocalyptic event that has set lose demons and monsters upon the world. This is very much in keeping with past entries in the series, which have frequently featured dark, mature stories driven by moral choices as well as traditional, often exceptionally difficult, JRPG mechanics. For now, we’ll have to wait to learn what this title’s story and gameplay will look like. However, the trailer did reveal the game will run on Unreal Engine 4, so it should at least look pretty good.

Tragically, that’s about all we know at this point, so we don’t even have a release window yet. Also, nothing has been said regarding localization for other markets, but that seems highly likely as the franchise, while never as big as some other JRPGs, has grown a dedicated following both in and outside of Japan. Be sure to stay on the lookout for more details in the future.
