…Rayman?

Masahiro Sakurai has proven himself to be a master of hype. Nintendo had teased all weekend that a Super Smash Bros. character reveal was slated for today, but the game’s director apparently couldn’t resist teasing fans with a bit of a bait-and-switch just a few hours before the announcement. Sakurai unveiled a trophy of Ubisoft’s Rayman on Miiverse, leading fans to start buzzing about the possibility of one of the publisher’s fighters debuting in today’s trailer. While the trophy is legitimate, Nintendo’s reveal instead focused on a trio of fighters from the company’s own franchises.

Pic of the day. In order to make Rayman’s trophy, we asked Ubisoft to share their references. We were expecting to receive 2D drawing references for Rayman, but to our surprise, they sent us data of a brand new 3D model that they rendered for this game!! And that was how this trophy was created. It takes a lot of work creating each model, so it’s wonderful that the creators contributed their own efforts!!

Regardless of today’s news, the trophy’s inclusion raises some interesting questions. Certainly the biggest is whether or not this is foreshadowing the debut of an Ubisoft character in the roster. Nintendo fans were less than pleased when Rayman Legends was delayed on Wii U in order to accommodate a release on other consoles. Since then, relations between the two companies haven’t seemed particularly strong. Is this the start of a better relationship forming between the two companies? And, if Ubisoft doesn’t have a character in the Smash roster, does that mean that we should expect to see other third party characters appearing as trophies as well? Either way, it looks like Sakurai has given us yet another reason to talk about the upcoming fighter.

As usual, stay tuned to Nintendojo where we’ll have more information as it develops. In the meantime, let us know what Ubisoft character you wouldn’t mind seeing in the next Super Smash Bros. titles!
