Over the last year or so, several outlets have been buzzing with rumors of a new model for the Nintendo Switch. Those murmurs gained a bit more traction thanks to a new piece today from The Wall Street Journal. According to the paper, Nintendo is expected to unveil two new versions of the popular system, one targeted towards the hardcore crowd and another towards more casual fans. Both models are expected to release before the end of 2019.

The official announcement will supposedly occur during this year’s E3. Past rumors have pointed towards a version of Switch that would be solely used as a handheld device, and the WSJ piece seems to hint that this could be the case for the more casual release. Some features would be dropped to keep costs lower, such as rumble. Presumably, this version would be intended as a replacement for 3DS, which has no new major releases on the horizon. The “hardcore” version, on the other hand, will apparently give fans a more powerful version of the hardware, though the WSJ piece explicitly states that the release would still not be as powerful as the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.

At this time, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. The Wall Street Journal’s reputation certainly lends this a bit more credence, but the rumors of new Switch models have been floating around for some time. As always, stay tuned to Nintendojo for more information as it develops!
