A set of leaked videos hit the Internet this morning, allegedly from the upcoming Super Smash Bros. titles for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. While we cannot confirm the authenticity of the videos, we can tell you that three previously unannounced fighters appear in them. If the videos are to be trusted, Ganondorf, Bowser Jr., and Shulk will all appear as playable fighters in the upcoming brawler. Unfortunately, the videos have been removed, apparently due to a copyright claim from Nintendo of America.
Given the fact that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS makes its debut in October, the timing of these videos certainly makes it seem more authentic. After all, if someone did fake the footage, what would they have to gain this far along into the development process? While the Smash Bros. franchise has seen a number of hoaxes through the years, they usually appear earlier in the development cycle, and rarely in video form. The fact that Nintendo had those videos pulled from YouTube certainly seems to make the whole thing look like an authentic leak, rather than an elaborate hoax.
As for the characters themselves, it’s an exciting trio, if true. Ganondorf’s return seemed like a foregone conclusion, but Shulk and Bowser Jr. are a bit more surprising. Shulk’s debut appearance as the protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles would make him one of the newest characters in the game, but he’s also one that fans have been clamoring for. While Bowser Jr. has appeared in a number of titles since his debut in Super Mario Sunshine, it seemed as though Nintendo had started to downplay him in favor of the Koopalings, as of late. Of course, given that the character takes up one roster slot rather than seven, he would make a bit more sense.

What a shame that Sakurai didn’t get to properly reveal the new characters. Also Marc you didn’t mention that an alleged image of all the characters on the selection screen was revealed. It showed The Duck Hunt Dog as a fighter, and did not include Ice Climbers or Lucas on the roster…

I left out the screen because it leaked weeks ago, outside of the videos themselves. While the source is presumed to be the same, one seems more authentic than the other. And after the “Tetris Block” that was leaked way back when Melee (or was it Brawl?) was in development, I’m a little more hesitant without solid proof. So, basically, I believe Ganon, Bowser Jr. and Shulk are real, but I’m not quite convinced on Duck Hunt Dog just yet. :p
