Welcome to this week’s Weekly News Roundup! While at first I didn’t think of this as a particularly substantial week for news, I was proven immediately wrong with the arrival of two big announcements and one web Easter egg. So let’s get this roundup on the road!

Somewhat of a Date Set on the Wii U

While it is still up in the air when exactly the Wii U will be finally released, there was an announcement about the general launch period. After the rather disappointing launch of the 3DS, Nintendo wants to take its time with the Wii U and has decided to release the system at the very earliest by the next fiscal year, which would be April 2012.

Satoru Iwata also stated that he definitely wanted to have the final draft of the system (for lack of a better term) on display during E3 in 2012. Taking that into account, then that would probably push the release to sometime within June or July at the earliest.

New Firmware Update w/ Super Mario 3D Land

Looks like some significant changes will happen as a result of purchasing Super Mario 3D Land: a new firmware update.

Will you be picking up Super Mario 3D Land? Let us know in the comments!

The update is mandatory in order to play the game. This is also not to be confused with the larger update happening later in the month which includes 3D Video Recording, a sequel to Find Mii, and some other Mii Plaza related shenanigans, among other things. This update includes a more improved Friends List that involves the ability to join in on a game with a friend on the list. Some say that this is a huge step in the process of Nintendo taking online gaming more seriously but players will have to wait and see.

Google Does a Barrel Roll

While nothing of real substance, it’s still at least newsworthy in the sense of memes ascending to some unprecedented levels. Google has always supplied the users with amusing Easter eggs through the years such as typing “Tilt” in the search bar, having the front page translated into languages like “Bork Bork” and Klingon. This one, however, takes the cake in sheer geekery for most Nintendo fans.

For those who have been living under  a rock, Google has instituted a new Easter egg that is triggered when you type “Do a Barrel Roll” into the search bar (press enter if you’re one of the folks who doesn’t have instant search) and it does pretty much just that. Why? Well, why not.

That’s all for this week, however if there’s anything that was missed, feel free to comment . Also, if you are one of those who enjoys a good discussion about news and like to voice your opinion, feel free to do so in the comments. Until next time, happy gaming!
