E3 2011 Nightly News Roundup 06.07.11 (Smith) masthead

Two words: Wii U. No bigger name will define this year’s E3. Why, you might ask? Because vivid and powerful, direct and explosive, Nintendo’s next home console plans to take the entirety of the digital world and make it feel as real as real life. And it will combine the potentials of a dual-screen and responsive motion controls to make the experience that much more dynamic.

Wii U
All the horsepower of the current gen packed into a two-inch tall disc player. Swe~et!

While Sony and Microsoft offered us basically more of the same, Nintendo threw down a new controller that soared even higher than all of the surrounding rumors. Have you ever had to halt an epic video game moment midway through? Not anymore. With Wii U players are given the option of immediately switching their television feed directly into the palms of their hands and back. Iwata did make it clear that this revolutionary aspect of the controller is not to be considered a handheld presentation in any way, but more of a convenience. Sadly, Nintendo left the price range and expected season of its release as mysteries to be longed for.

Wii U Controller
It does everything but let the dog out.

The surge I felt in my stomach the moment Iwata mentioned Masahiro Sakurai and Wii U in the same sentence is something I will remember for a long time. My gut’s immediate response was correct: Super Smash Bros. 4 is on its way! No approximate date was set, but we do know that it is being developed for both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, with some form of interaction between the two – and that’s good enough for me.
