Rime on Switch in Summer 17

Is mysteriously more expensive than on other platforms, sadly.

Consider this a case of “good news, bad news.” The good news is that Rime, developed by Tequila Works, will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 26. The third-person action/adventure game will then land on Nintendo Switch not long after it has dropped on those other platforms. Rime is releasing in both physical and digital forms, which will be quite welcome to fans who enjoy boxes and cartridges. The bad new? For some reason the Switch version of Rime is $39.99, as opposed to the $29.99 it will be on all other platforms.

The ten dollar price hike isn’t sitting well with fans, especially as publisher Grey Box hasn’t provided a solid reason as to why. Eurogamer inquired as to the justification for the increased price and was given the response, “[w]e set prices for our products based on the costs of development and publishing for each specific platform.” Apparently, Grey Box didn’t elaborate beyond that and a FAQ that the publisher sent to Eurogamer, which doesn’t say much.

Given the record-breaking response to Switch, it seems odd to charge extra on a platform with such hype and good will amongst fans who would likely be intrigued by Rime’s Zelda-inspired qualities. We’ve included the latest trailer for Rime above: does the game seem worthy of a purchase despite the confounding premium that Nintendo fans will be paying to play the game? Let us know in the comments!

At this time, Rime for Switch can still be pre-ordered off of Gamestop’s website for $29.99. While Gamestop isn’t to everyone’s liking, they do have a “pre-order low price guarantee.”

I expect Gamestop will adjust this soon to reflect the $40 asking price, so acting fast could save you $10. Plus it comes with a cloth map if you’re into that sort of thing.
