Pokémon X and Y Set Preorder Record in Japan

Somebody really does have to catch them all.

One wouldn’t necessarily expect the Pokémon series to still be performing so well after nearly two decades of games, and yet, here we are. The newest installments in the franchise, the soon-to-be-released Pokémon X and Y versions, have racked up an impressive 1.26 million pre-orders in Japan, a record for 3DS games and beating both Pokémon Black and White and their sequels.

The 3DS has been quietly going from strength to strength over the years, and recently passed the 30 million sales mark. These latest additions to Pokémon will almost certainly be a solid hit in the West, as the previous games have been, and may well shift many more units, since these games are the first in the main series to be 3DS-only.

Pokémon X and Y release worldwide on October 12, and will bring many additions to the series, including but not limited to special Mega Evolutions, a brand new display style for both battles and overworld, and a weird focus on France…
