This weekend, Pokémon director Junichi Masuda released a special video message for Pokémon fans, giving some greater insight into the inspiration behind Kalos, the region in which Pokémon X and Y will be set.

As many have speculated, the Kalos region is primarily influenced by France. According to Masuda, the theme of the upcoming games was “beauty,” which led the development team to think of the country. Lumiose City in particular draws inspiration from Paris and other French cities, even featuring its own Eifel-esque tower at its center. You can watch the full message below.

Masuda ended the video by revealing one more new Pokémon from the upcoming games: Honedge, a Steel- and Ghost-type sword Pokémon. According to the Pokédex, it is believed that an ancient spirit lives within the sword.

What do you think Honedge? Let us know in the comments!
