Playtonic Gives Another Update on Yooka-Laylee

It’s still coming, Switch fans!

It’s been an agonizingly long wait for Nintendo fans excited for Yooka-Laylee. The spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie captured the interest of Nintendo fans right off-the-bat (no pun intended), but the Switch version has hit a handful of delays. Developer Playtonic Games has given yet another update, promising fans that the title is coming soon.

The Playtonic team has been working tirelessly to bring Yooka-Laylee to Nintendo Switch and we’re very nearly there (we promise!) However, we’ve encountered some final technical hurdles and had been waiting for the arrival of Unity 5.6 in order to fix them. Although this has now been released, it has unfortunately introduced other issues which we are working with Unity to resolve before we can submit to Nintendo and lock in our release timeline.

We understand the frustration that it’s taken so long to get the game in your hands but we hope that you understand that we’re working as fast as we can and want the game to perform as well as it possibly can on Switch. Once these remaining issues are resolved we hope to finally be able to commit to and share a launch date. Thanks as ever for your patience and please bear with us – we are getting there!

For Playtonic, getting the Switch version out soon is a high-priority in more ways than one. While the developer is likely eager to get the game in the hands of fans, there is another factor at play, as well. The PS4 and Xbox One versions have both been discounted to about $20 at most retailers. While no price has been announced as of this writing, given the time it’s taken to get the title on Switch, Playtonic will likely still have to charge the $40 MSRP the title initially released at to help the developer break even. Of course, one could argue the same thing about Doom and Rocket League, yet Switch owners still seem excited about picking those titles up! Hopefully, the portability of Switch will help these games succeed on the platform. Personally, I’m still holding out for the Switch version of Yooka-Laylee, myself!

Given how long its been and the…. lukewarm… reviews it got, my interest is seriously dwindling. Like, it’s been ages since I even thought about this game prior to this article, and way back when on first announcement, I was beyond overjoyed about it.

If it is set at $40, it’ll probably be $55-$60 CAD, and at this point that’s more than I would be willing to pay for it, unless there’s some serious console-exclusive content/features for it.

Much like Marc, I too have held off buying this game on other systems.

Just because my excitement has waned (for the time being) doesn’t mean I won’t eventually get this game. If it’s a good game, then it’s a good game, regardless of how close it released to Odyssey or other superior titles. I’m looking forward to judging for myself as it appears opinions are split.

I enjoyed the Rare titles on N64 so I’m intrigued by this title.

I’d love a physical version, complete with throwback Nintendo 64-style boxart. Doesn’t appear to be happening, but given all the recent noise about Switch games eating up significant amounts of space, a physical version is even more appealing to me. I have a 200gb micro SD card, but I’m hoping it lasts the life of my Switch. With so many games being announced daily, I assume I’ll be upgrading eventually.
