Another week has arrived and it will once again leave many Nintendo gamers disappointed– with a few exceptions. The grand total of retail releases this week across all Nintendo platforms comes in at a whopping two. Wii gets yet another family oriented sports compilation while DS owners have Puzzler World 2 to be indifferent to– it may very well be decent but the DS library features an amazing collection of puzzle games that makes the genre very hard to compete in.

The downloadable selection available this week is considerably more robust and should whet core gamer appetites, with some noteworthy releases and a much broader selection. WiiWare has finally received Flight Control, an action puzzler of sorts that has gamers managing in coming waves of landing planes while trying to avoid unfortunate aerial accidents. The game was a popular iOS game when it was launched in 2009 and has managed to find its way onto many other platforms, including DSiWare, so the WiiWare version is a little late to the party. Regardless, it is still a solid title and hopefully it makes it to WiiWare without any hiccups.

Nintendo eShop has the most offerings this week with a nice variety of titles. Blockado is another puzzle compilation wrapped up in an adventure-style story. Zoonies – Escape from Makatu is a side-scroller from Kiloo Games in Denmark (!) with robust visuals and physics-manipulating stylus action reminiscent of Yoshi Touch and Go or Ivy the Kiwi?— a nice return to the Nintendo DS’ roots that saw release in Europe and Australia before today’s North American release. Meanwhile, Build-a-lot features real estate market simulation elements and the last couple weeks of economic news have left me with little desire to delve further into the matter.

This week’s biggest title is definitely 3D Classics: Urban Champion, the latest in Nintendo’s line of classic NES titles with 3D visuals. Urban Champion was one of the earliest fighting games to be made and the first to make it onto NES. The game varies from most other entries in the genre by featuring gameplay that focuses on knocking your opponent from one screen to the next in an effort to knock him down a manhole before the fight gets broken up by the fuzz. Urban Champion was a trailblazer back in the day and is a welcome addition to the 3D Classics series.

As slow as the last few weeks have been, be sure to check in next week, because 3DS will finally be getting another major release: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked. Until then, get in on some unique platforming action with Zoonies, iOS simulation with Flight Control, or old-school fighting with Urban Champion.
