In Nintendo’s many years in the video game industry, the company has twice hosted the Nintendo World Championships: one in 1990 and the other just a few years ago in 2015. However, Nintendo has announced the wait for the next one won’t be nearly as long for another event, because it’s actually scheduled for October 17 of this year.

Leading up to this year’s Championship, Nintendo will be hosting qualifying events at eight Best Buy stores around the country. Participants will be divided into two age groups, 12 and under and 13 and over, and then tasked with completing a time trial race in Mario Kart 7 for 3DS. To keep things even, each participant will compete on the same course, with the same character and kart combination as everyone else in their group. The qualifiers will be held at the following locations and times:

  • August 19-20, 2017: 610 Exterior St., Bronx, NY 10451. 10am-7pm Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday.

  • September 9-10, 2017: 17364 Southcenter Parkway, Tukwila, WA 98188. 10am-7pm Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday.

Aside from the competition, those interested will have a few other incentives for attending. First, attendees will get the chance to play demos of Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns. Also, My Nintendo members who check in will get 100 Platinum Points as well as a special pin.

The top competitors at each location will then get the opportunity to compete in the finals, which will be held on October 17 in New York City at Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom. Expect to hear more about the event as the date gets closer.
