During this morning’s Nintendo Direct broadcast in Japan, Nintendo unveiled another new fighter for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for 3DS and Wii U: Shulk, the protagonist of Wii’s sprawling RPG, Xenoblade Chronicles!

Like in his native title, Shulk’s primary weapon in Super Smash Bros. is the Monado, and his move set seems to be derived from the various Arts he wielded in that game. He can also summon his companions Riki and Dunban to join him on the battlefield, presumably for his Final Smash. Take a look at Shulk’s debut trailer below.

Shulk’s announcement lends credence to the Super Smash Bros. footage that was reportedly leaked earlier this week, which showed him and two other fighters– Bowser Jr., another series newcomer, and Ganondorf– battling on the Yoshi’s Island stage. With Shulk now confirmed for the games, it seems likely that Nintendo will unveil the other two characters before long.

Nintendo also announced a special Club Nintendo promotion for Super Smash Bros. Those who purchase both 3DS and Wii U versions of the title and register them on Club Nintendo will receive a free soundtrack CD.

Are you happy to see Shulk appear in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U? And will you be taking advantage of the new Club Nintendo promotion when the games launch? Let us know in the comments!

This reveal, like many of the others for the new Smash, put a huge smile on my face.

Somewhat lost in the shuffle of big news today is that Xenoblade Chronicles is coming out for the new-model 3DS! I now feel justified in putting off getting an XL, and very impatient to hear when those things will be available in the States!
