In a surprising bit of news out of today’s Nintendo Direct conference, Nintendo has announced Animal Crossing Plaza, a new application for the Wii U. Planned to run from now until the end of 2014, the free application will allow Animal Crossing: New Leaf owners to interact with one another via the Wii U’s Miiverse communities. But it won’t just be for chat! Players will be able to show off in-game photos that they’ve taken, and show the greater Animal Crossing community what they’ve been up to!

The application will draw information directly from the 3DS’ SD card, which can be inserted into the Wii U. Nintendo will also use the application to announce upcoming events.

This certainly opens up a lot of potential new options for the game. The Internet community has always embraced the creative side of Animal Crossing, and now there’s a much greater ability for players to interact and share with one another.
