Opponents of The Wind Waker‘s cartoony art direction rejoice! According to a recent interview with UK based games magazine GamesTM, Nintendo may think twice before employing such a divisive style in the future.

Highly controversial at its launch, Wind Waker‘s visuals have become beloved by fans both young and old, especially hailed for their visual fidelity when compared with other contemporary titles. Legendary game developer and long time Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, however, must still remember the sting of rejection, as he made the statement in regards to the game, “We encountered an awful lot of problems from the drastic leap we took with Wind Waker. I think we will be a bit more careful in the future.”

Not all hope is lost, however, for those of us who cherish cel shaded Link as a much needed breath of fresh air for the series. Aonuma did go on to mention that, provided they were able to find a style that they could be sure both the developers and players would be able to enjoy, the company might be willing to break fresh visual ground with future titles. What type of visuals would you like to see in the next Zelda? Claymation perhaps? Or something more dark and gritty? Let us know in the comments below!

Thank you! I’ve always been one to argue that Zelda ought to pursue an atmosphere of Wagnerian epicness, such as we received with Twilight Princess. Leave cell shaded graphics to Borderlands.

I will be straight up honest and say that as much as I love Wind Waker’s visuals, the next Zelda needs to be an HD masterpiece of intense realism.

Having now gone back and played Wind Waker again in the HD version It is still amazing looking. Twilight was to dark and fuzzy and gritty. I want have fun when I play Zelda games. LttP and Wind Waker really were fun. Twilight was so dark and long so long oh my gosh it was long. I’d love to see more Cel. WK conveyed so much more emotion in the faces than any other Zelda game ever has.

Nintendo should keep changing the styles. I enjoy the realistic Zelda games just as much as the cell shaded ones! I just enjoy the overall experience.
