Nintendo Announces Mega Evolving in Pokémon X and Y

Nintendo adds another rung to the Pokémon evolutionary ladder.

Another new feature for Pokémon X and Y has been revealed, certain Pokémon will have the ability to Mega Evolve into a form beyond their normal final evolution. What makes this feature different from regular evolution is that your creatures only hold this form in battle and they require a particular item to attain it. When Mega Evolved, Pokémon gain new powers and a new look, something that was already teased in the images leaked long ago of a monster that clearly looked to belong to the same lineage of Mew and Mewtwo: it is, in fact, Mega Mewtwo.

The key to learning about this feature in the new games will be one of the gym leaders, Korinna in Shalour City. Though those of you who pick up the game at launch will have a heads up as on October 12 Nintendo will be distributing a special Torchic holding a Mega Stone, which means once fully evolved into Blazikin it will be able to make the leap to Mega Blaziken. Other Pokémon also confirmed to be getting the Mega treatment are Mawile, Lucario, and (two of my personal favorites) Absol and Ampharos. I can only imagine more will be announced as we approach release.

I have to say that this news really excites me as it further highlights just how much Nintendo and Game Freak are doing to make this a very significant generational leap. In the meantime, though, I want to know what creatures you want to see go all Mega; I am personally hoping for Mega Sandslash and Mega Alakazam.

Mega Kangaskhan was announced at the Pokemon World Championships. Apparently the pouched kanga kid jumps out to perform a duplicate, but weaker attack each turn.

Personally I’m hoping for a mega Espeon or Umbreon, though I’d take a mega Magikarp…
