Gamers who are enjoying the hardcore dungeon crawling of the recently released Etrian Odyssey IV will be pleased to know that Japan is already prepping for the next excursion in the RPG franchise. Actually, Etrian Odyssey: Millennium Girl is a re-imagining of the original game in the series instead of a full-blown sequel, though that doesn’t mean Atlus won’t be changing up the formula.

Your hero will once again be doing some first person dungeon exploration with a group of class-based compatriots including the Medic, the Gunner, an Alchemist, and, of course, the Paladin. What’s different this time around is that these characters aren’t just classes, they have predetermined names, back stories, and relationships. However, if you loved the previous games for the variety of classes and customization options you will be pleased to know that you are still free to change their class and tweak their skill layout to your liking. Once assembled, the team will continue the tradition of exploring and fighting their way through some ancient ruins exposed following a series of earthquakes have hit the world of Etria. In other words, Atlus is hoping to create a more compelling, character and story driven experience without sacrificing the features that made the series such a niche success.

As excited as fans might be to hear of this announcement, those of us on this side of the Pacific will have a while to wait as Atlus has only discussed the Japanese release, which will occur on June 27. However, considering the franchise’s history in America and Atlus’s efforts to keep fans of niche RPGs happy, an eventual release outside Japan seems likely.
