The idea of preserving gaming history has been growing over the years. However, while most efforts focus on making sure people can access the games as they were released, there’s also the matter of what happened before our beloved games hit store shelves. The team of fans at Helix Chamber have focused on digging into the past of the Pokémon franchise and they recently uncovered a great deal of early assets revealing everything from early versions of locations to sprites for unused Pokémon.

Interesting revelations include a possible evolution or a middle form between Psyduck and Golduck, and even an alternate evolution for Wartortle. There are even completely unused creatures, including entire evolutionary lines. Believe it or not, Drifloon wasn’t the first time the developers considered a balloon Pokémon. There are plenty of unused sprites, however many just feature the back of the creature’s head, so it isn’t always easy to tell what exactly the designers intended.

While the many “new” Pokémon sprites are interesting, there are a number of assets showing off unused trainer art, as well as early versions of entire towns. For any Pokémon fan, it’s definitely worth a look. You can find more at the link below!
