One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X, the upcoming Wii U fighting game, is set to receive Amiibo support in the coming weeks in the form of optional costumes for its characters. By scanning the collectible figures, players of the 3DS title (released on November 13 in Japan) will be able to fight while fitted out in the following finery. Nami fans will find her transformed into the Wii Fit Trainer, Franky does a spectacular impression of Donkey Kong, Brook becomes a rather skull-like version of Marth, Chopper dons a Kirby hat, Usopp takes on the essence of Yoshi, and Nico Robin gains armour and firepower (at least visually) while fighting as Samus.

As reported on Friday, the implementation is markedly similar to that used in Mario Kart 8, and also means that Nintendo is not the only company to include Amiibo compatibility in its games. The early worries about limited gimmicky appeal may have been at least somewhat misplaced, it seems.

Too bad they didn’t get Amiibo figures out earlier – the Nintendo-themed costumes in Bayonetta would have been a great use case there too.

(On the other hand, this way nobody needs extra peripherals to access that content… so maybe it’s better “as is”? I’m ok with them unlocking optional costumes with Amiibo figures though.)
