After several rumors, and even the appearance of a spin-off title on the Nintendo eShop, developer Mojang announced this morning that Minecraft will finally arrive on a Nintendo platform. What’s even more exciting, Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be available in just under two weeks!

According to Mojang, the title will support Off-TV Play. While it’s safe to assume that Nintendo-exclusive content is very likely in the near future, nothing has been announced at this time (though a Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam tie-in seems like a no-brainer). Since Nintendo fans have quite a bit of other content to catch up on, however, the Wii U version will offer several add-on packs at launch. Some will be available for free, while others will be released as separate, paid download packs.

Free:

  • Battle & Beasts Skin Pack
  • Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack
  • City Texture Pack
  • Fantasy Texture Pack
  • Festive Mash-up Pack
  • Natural Texture Pack

Paid DLC:

  • Candy Texture Pack
  • Cartoon Texture Pack
  • Doctor Who Skins Volume 1
  • Doctor Who Skins Volume 2
  • Festive Skin Pack
  • Greek Mythology Mash-up Pack
  • Halloween 2015 Mash-up Pack
  • Mass Effect Mash-up Pack
  • Pattern Texture Pack
  • Plastic Texture Pack
  • The Simpsons Skin Pack
  • Skyrim Mash-up Pack
  • Star Wars Classic Skin Pack
  • Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack
  • Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack
  • Steampunk Texture Pack

Minecraft: Wii U Edition will release on the Nintendo eShop on December 17 for $29.99. A retail release is currently planned for 2016. Do you plan on checking out Minecraft: Wii U Edition? Let us know in the comments below!

It’s a bit late to the party, but its still a huge title that is incredibly popular with certain groups.

Good on Nintendo for (I assume) arranging this!

Based on the comments by Nintendo’s President we may be in for a much longer life cycle of the Wii U even after the NX comes out. If we look back on the initial concerns of early Wii U owners was the lack of games, not enough name difference/advertisement, lack of third party support. Never was the Wii U itself called a bad console, just a poorly supported one and as it gets more of itself out there, puts out more quality games and drops its price as it just has, it may finally be recognized by a broader audience, possibly overwelmingly, despite being years into its life cycle. Basically, it’s just been outside of the view of the mass consumer until something highlights it for them. This is all hypothetical but if the folks who made Minecraft are willing to commit, they realize something’s going in. Hopefully this is not the last big game announcement we get.
