While Nintendo fans were expecting some announcements to come out of The Game Awards, one major bit of news came completely out of left field. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is coming exclusively to Switch from developer Team Ninja and published by Nintendo!

Details are scarce at this time, but one interesting note is that the game will feature the X-Men in addition to the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. While Marvel’s mutant team prominently appeared in the first two titles in the Ultimate Alliance franchise, their absence was particularly notable in recent games such as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.

The news is surprising, but certainly welcome. Outside of Wii Sports and Twilight Princess, the original Ultimate Alliance was one of Wii’s best launch titles. At one point, Nintendo actually considered allowing Link and Samus to appear in the title alongside the Marvel heroes, though the two characters were scrapped after then-publisher Activision showed Nintendo Link and Samus running in the PlayStation 3 version. With the announcement that the new game is an exclusive published by Nintendo, perhaps the two characters will get an opportunity to appear in this game, instead!
