In addition to unveiling two new Pokémon applications, this morning’s Pokémon-themed Nintendo Direct also gave us a look at three more Mega Evolutions, this time for the original Kanto starters!

Along with improved stats and an altered appearance, each of the three Kanto starting Pokémon– Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise– receives a new ability upon Mega Evolving:

  • Mega Venusaur gains Thick Fat, improving its resistance to Ice- and Fire-type attacks.
  • Mega Charizard gains Drought, causing the weather to turn sunny when it comes onto the field and improving the strength of Fire-type attacks.
  • And Mega Blastoise gains Mega Launcher, a new ability that improves the strength of attacks such as Water Pulse and Dark Pulse.

Perhaps most exciting of all, players will also be able to choose one of the original three starting Pokémon at the beginning of their adventure in Pokémon X and Y. Unlike a typical Pokémon game, you’ll receive your very first Pokémon from one of your companions, who will offer you a choice between Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Afterwards, you’ll then receive one of the original three starting Pokémon from Professor Sycamore, giving players two different starting Pokémon to take with them on their journey.

What do you think of the three new Mega Evolutions? Which one will you be starting off with in Pokémon X and Y? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
