Over a decade ago, a large portion of the news media tripped over themselves declaring Pokémon “a dying fad.” This weekend, fans in Japan once again proved just how popular the franchise remains when they lined up at Pokémon Centers around the country to pre-order Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The reported wait time at the Pokémon Center in Tokyo? Just over three hours!

While the majority of fans were there to pre-order the latest titles in the Pokémon franchise, it didn’t stop them from picking up other Pokémon merchandise, as well! Pokémon Centers around the country had also refreshed their quantity of the popular Substitute plush toy, which reportedly sold out in just a half hour at the Pokémon Center in Nagoya. Fans that closely follow Nintendo Direct might recognize the plush toy as the same that Masahiro Sakurai used when he announced some of the assist Pokémon from the upcoming Super Smash Bros. titles on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire release November 21. Stay tuned to Nintendojo where we’ll have more information on the titles as the release date approaches.
