Publisher Nicalis, the studio that brought Cave Story and other acclaimed indie titles to Nintendo consoles, announced via Twitter that it will be releasing Grinsia in the 3DS eShop on May 8.

Originally developed for mobile phones, Grinsia is a retro-inspired JRPG in the vein of Square’s 16-bit Final Fantasy titles. The game follows a family of treasure hunters, who become entangled in a plot that threatens the fate of the world while searching for ancient ruins.

Along with improved controls, the 3DS version of Grinsia features a number of enhancements over the original release, including a re-localized script, dual screen support, a new soundtrack, and a day and night system.

Nicalis has yet to announce a European release for Grinsia.
