New details have emerged for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate. Exclusive for 3DS, it’s a brand new game set in the rebooted Lords of Shadow universe.

You control Trevor Belmont, and you’ll be armed with your combat cross (or chain whip for newbie Vampire Killers) with lots of whip attacks at your disposal to dispatch enemies like skeletons, hulking animated armours, and giant executioners. You can pick from direct attacks for manic melee brawling or aerial attacks, that reach farther but are less strong. Dark magic attacks also support your combat, but your magic bar will run out quickly if you rely on it too much. The combat cross also allows you to grab enemies with the R button to finish them off, and if you play well enough, enemies will drop magical energy to help refill your magic bar.

But there’ll also be secondary weapons on hand, like the boomerang. It’s very powerful, but you’re advised to save them for key moments in the game. It’s special ability is to stick to enemies and causes damage over time, and it’s also a good distance weapon that can be charged up (although you’ll be vulnerable while doing so).

Platforming plays a big role too. Use the combat cross to swing across the 2.5D environment with R, double jump to explore new areas, or lower yourself down on your chain too find hidden rooms. As with previous Castlevania games, there’ll be lots of secrets and exploration involved, as well as several upgrades scattered throughout the game. Good thing you can make notes on your map to remind you to come back to certain areas later then!

But Trevor’s not the only character you’ll be controlling– there’s a total of four playable characters in Mirror of Fate, including the son of the Big Vamp himself, Alucard. Each one has unique abilities, which is quite apt given its Symphony of the Night-esque aesthetic.

The game’s set to launch in the fall of this year.
