Outside of Hyrule Warriors, perhaps the biggest surprise of today’s Nintendo Direct was the announcement of Dr. Luigi and NES Remix, two retro-themed downloadable titles coming to the Wii U eShop this month.

As its name implies, Dr. Luigi is a new installment of the Dr. Mario series, albeit with the green plumber in the lead role. As in previous Dr. Mario games, the object is to clear various stages of viruses by matching them up with the appropriately colored pills. In addition, the game will feature several different modes to choose from, including online multiplayer and the popular Virus Buster mode from the Brain Age titles.

NES Remix, meanwhile, is a collection of 8-bit challenges based on classic NES titles, including Super Mario Bros., Excitebike, Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, and several others. Each challenge features remixed elements to give them a fresh feel, such as guiding Link from The Legend of Zelda up the girders from Donkey Kong, or controlling Luigi in a mirrored Super Mario Bros. stage.

Dr. Luigi will be released in the eShop on December 31. Wii U owners can download NES Remix from the service beginning today.
