Capcom announced in a Q&A at the latest financial briefing that it will be focusing heavily on HD remasters of previously released games. “HD remasters of our catalogue hit titles will be one of our key business activities. Overseas, it is becoming difficult to sell these lower-priced and re-mastered titles at stores because of the declining number of stores and sales area limitations. Therefore, we started aggressive digital download sales activities. These activities created new demand for these titles.” said Capcom
The company experienced unexpected success with the PC remaster of the original Resident Evil earlier this year, and its success has inspired the company to continue with this approach. Next on the list is Devil May Cry 4, which is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this June. It’s an interesting strategy to prioritize, rather than focusing on all-new content. But this approach seems to bring more profit with less work.
Capcom gave no indication about its plans for these remasters on Wii U. Nintendo and Capcom are enjoying a good relationship at the moment with the success of the exclusive new Monster Hunter games. So, remasters on Wii U only seem natural. Can we expect remasters of such hits as Okami, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, or the fabled “Capcom Five” from the Gamecube era for Wii U? Will Capcom finally release a Mega Man game again?
