New franchises can often struggle to find an audience. Even the most critically acclaimed titles can falter at retail as audiences opt instead for more familiar wares. Luckily, Square Enix’s 3DS RPG Bravely Default managed to find both critical and financial success in spite of that potential hurdle. The publisher has released official sales numbers for the title, and it appears that over one million units have been shipped worldwide.

According to Square Enix, 400,000 of those sales have been in Japan, while 600,000 copies were shipped in other territories. According to a press release from Nintendo earlier in the year, 200,000 copies of Bravely Default were sold in the title’s first month available in the US, so we can assume that at least a third of those 600,000 copies were shifted in North America. Square Enix’s sales information does include digital downloads of the title, but there is currently no information on the breakdown between the original version and the updated version For the Sequel.

Speaking of sequels, fans of Bravely Default shouldn’t have long to wait on the next game in the series. The company has confirmed Bravely Second, but there is no known release date at this time. Stay tuned to Nintendojo where we’ll have more on the sequel in the months to come.
