I imagine few gamers need an introduction to Adventure Time at this point. The wonderfully weird, whimsical, and oftentimes poignant adventures of Finn the human and Jake the dog have not only been chronicled in the hugely successful cartoon series, they have also inspired three rather middling games. As well loved as the show might be, its games are still licensed titles based on a cartoon, and that seems to be a pretty difficult obstacle to overcome. Regardless of how the past games were received, publisher Little Orbit is carrying on with the license and have brought on a new developer, Vicious Cycle, for its fourth crack at the franchise, Finn and Jake Investigations.

While the past games varied quite a bit in terms of gameplay, they all wore their old-school inspirations on their sleeve, especially in terms of their preference for pixel art characters and flat shaded environments. Finn and Jake Investigations looks like it will be going in a dramatically different direction by featuring full 3D character models moving about in detailed 3D worlds. In terms of gameplay, little has been said outside of the fact there will be puzzles to solve and enemies to battle as Finn and Jake work as investigators. What mysteries will they be solving and how they will go about doing it remain unknown, but considering the source material, I doubt we’re going to be seeing grisly murders or cases of political and corporate corruption.

Adventure Time: Finn and Jake Investigations isn’t scheduled for release until this fall, so there is still plenty of time for us to learn more about this new direction for this popular franchise.
