Swedish indie game developer Hi-Bit Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign for their genre-blending title, 198X.

Featuring incredible art from a team spread out around the world, the game focuses on Kid, a teenager living in Suburbia, just outside the City, with a love of arcade games. As Kid plays and masters more games he grows stronger, blurring the line between fiction and reality.

198X features five arcade games the player must beat, highlighting some of the most popular genres of the 80s: the beat ’em up, shoot ’em up, racing game, ninja game, and JRPG. Each game features core mechanics each genre is known for, as well as fully developed stages.

Hi-Bit Studios hopes to have the game out by March 2019 for Nintendo Switch and other platforms. At the time of writing the team has reached over $31k of its $56k goal, with 26 days left to reach it.

What do you think of 198X? Is this something you’d be interested in playing?
