Summary
We butcher company names as well as our own, yet somehow manage to learn something in the process. Like what to do with a battle of brainly sponsors, how ADD we are, and what we think of a new DS. Sort of.

First game appearance of Luigi was "Mario Bros." the arcade game that is available for all the Gameboy Advance Mario Bros. games.
First game appearance of Luigi where he was more than a palatte swap was "Super Mario Bros. 2," where he could hover by shuffling his legs
However, "Mario is Missing!" was the first game to give Luigi a starring role, back for MS-DOS in 1992.

Want to experience the greatness that is "Mario is Missing!"? Go to http://nintendo8.com/game/628/mario_is_missing/, then shortly thereafter boot up "Luigi's Mansion" to rectify your experience.

Luigi's first starring role was indeed "Mario is Missing", an edutainment title which the Mario characters were liscensed from Nintendo, but the game was made by another company. The first Nintendo-produced game featuring Luigi in a starring role was Luigi's Mansion, which came after Wario Land (Wario's first starring role), Yoshi's Island (Yoshi's first starring role) and Wario's Woods (Toad's first starring role), but before Super Princess Peach (Peach's first starring role). Personally, I'm waiting for a Waluigi game, but oh well.

Another good show. Aaron always makes things interesting, and I guess after talking about Tidman and Greg on the last show, I should mention that Noah does an excellent job as always, especially with a group seemingly crazier than Evan and Andy.

Keep up the good work.

Wouldn't Yoshi's first starring role be technically "Yoshi's Cookie," or was that similar to "Yoshi" in that Mario was technically the main character?

Can't forget "Yoshi's Safari" either, the Super-Scope game for the SNES-- pretty sure that would count, and it came before "Yoshi's Island". :-P

The Nintendo Nerdiness here makes me cry tears of joy!

The first time that he WASN'T a pallet swap was Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Japanese one.) You know, "Lost Levels" on the Famicom Disc System. It did have a selection for "Mario Game" and "Luigi Game" in it. Since the physics worked differently between the two brothers, playing as Luigi was quite a bit different from playing as Mario. You could almost say that Mario was just there to tag along on Luigi's game. So, actually, I'll just come out and say that Luigi was the star of Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan. First time Luigi was the only main character would be Mario is Missing.

Interesting note about Mario is Missing. The other main plot is that King Koopa was going to melt the polar ice caps and flood the Earth. Which, coincidentally, is what scientists used to say would stop Global Warming/Cooling in the 1970's. A prominent scientist named John Holdren suggested that we nuke the South Pole in an effort to alleviate rising temperatures and fix population location problems. He's now the Science Czar. I wonder how long it will be before we get King Koopa as our "Princess Czar" and Tatanga as our "Space Czar." Those sound like wonderful ideas... :D

So, any word yet from Evan the Koala Czar?

Oh, the whole fortune telling gig was mentioned because it's what Charles Martinet did before Mario Fundamentals (Apparently, Mario Game Gallery) at trade shows. There would be a screen with Mario on it and he would taunt the crowd and talk to them while they waited in line doing voices for Mario, Wario, and so forth. Sometimes being a bit crass at times, but always being funny. It's like a "roast" but with a group.

What I did was the same thing, just I couldn't be crass as it's a younger audience.

No haiku in this one? Ah. Maybe next episode.

Oh, noticed someone listed Yoshi's Island as the first Yoshi starring game. Isn't it actually Yoshi's Cookie? You play as Yoshi in that one, pushing buttons. Sure, Mario is in the background but Yoshi is clearly the star. Although the puzzle game Yoshi has Yoshi in it.. you play as Mario moving the plates. So, Yoshi's Cookie may count as Yoshi's first real "starring" role.

Overall, good podcast, keep up the good work.

Yeah, went back to "Yoshi's Cookie" just earlier today-- sorry to burst your bubble, dmgice (not to mention mine, as it's a great puzzler) but Mario quite technically is the primary character in the game. If you go to this site (http://www.mobygames.com/game/yoshis-cookie/cover-art/gameCoverId,16149/), you can see the back of the original game cover, which does indeed say that "It's up to Mario to sort and stack 'em before they pile too high!"

If we apply dmgice's logic, then it could be discerned that Mario, Luigi and Toad were just there to tag along for Peach's game, Super Mario Bros. 2 (Super Mario USA). Hence, that would be Peach's first starring role.

Just for you, Hbomb, I did some digging-- here you are (http://www.flashrolls.com/action-games/Waluigi-Game-Flash-Game.htm). May not be official, but it should hold you over.

Just finished listening and I'm pretty sure "Mario is Missing" for the PC has already been mentioned maybe once or twice. Great show!

I love the idea of a DS-HD. I wonder if the procs by Nvidia could also be put into an array and used in parallel to power the Wii-HD as well.

I've never actually played the NES one. In the Game Boy one, it's clearly Yoshi working the Vertical Plunger and Mario working the Horizontal one. Also, in multi-player, you can be Yoshi, Peach, or Bowser in a four player game link bonanza. The NES one only has Mario on plunger duty. So, I see your NES game and raise you the superior GB game. where Yoshi has a much more active role. The SNES version has Yoshi by himself on the plungers, but it came out a little after Yoshi's Island.

Good point on Super Mario Bros. USA. That WOULD be the first time we got some real heroic game play for the Princess and Toad. Considering that the game gives you a score at the end showing which characters you used more than the others.. we could infer that it wants you to play through as the different characters. Besides, Mario was pretty useless in Super Mario Bros. USA. Everyone -hopefully- played only as Toad as he had the fastest vegetable picking speed, ran the fastest, and charged the fastest. On the bosses, that was the most important thing in the game.

Took a look at this game really quickly.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/marios-game-gallery/cover-art/gameCoverId,23155/

And I noticed a few things. One, it says "The Familiar Voice of Mario" which leads me to believe they used Martinet in the previous game commercials leading up to that release. Also, the bottom of the box lists the release of the game as 1994 and the site lists it as a 1995 release. Everywhere else lists the game as being a delayed release from when the box art was printed, the Windows release finding a release date in 1995. Which is weird. The box lists it as Interplay developed and Sierra published. Mario FUNdamentals is listed as Mindscape developed and Brainstorm Published. Oddly, the Macintosh version of Mario's Game Gallery is called -check it out- Mario's Fundamentals and was released the same year as Mario Game Gallery on the Windows/DOS boxes. It appears that -depending on what you bought it for- the game was either Mario's Game Gallery on the PC or Mario's FUNdamentals on the MAC.

Oh! February 23, 1995 is the supposed diskette release date for the PC/MAC/DOS version. December 17, 1995 was the PC/MAC CD-ROM release. Although IGN lists Mario Game Gallery as being delayed all the way into 1998. IGN is just stupid.

I'm thrilled that others have stepped up to claim the trivia crowns. Share the podcast with your friends and bring in more listeners. The competition MUST get fierce. :D

Hey giantgreengoat, the nVidia Tegra chip would be plenty by itself without having to run multiple chips. It is also very scalable and is being introduced in many speeds. Within the next 2 years (supposedly) it will be 4 to 5 times more powerful than it is now, using the same low amounts of power. Sounds like it fits Nintendo's strategy as of late to me.

By the way, this is Greg from the podcast.
