ND: Is it difficult to build a rhythm game on an indie budget, given the expensive cost of music licensing?

JJ: Yes. Indie life is hard, but we make sure to keep our perspective. We’re lucky to be living our passions and when we are able to finish what we started, it’s all worthwhile.

ND: At what point did Kid Koala get involved with the game?

JJ: Kid Koala started it by reaching out into the Twitterverse to find game designers and game developers to help him on some of his various projects at the time, one of which was Floor Kids. He’s always been floating the idea of making Floor Kids into a game, but I didn’t know how we would do it and I didn’t know anyone who could. But we met Mike and Phil through Kid Koala’s Twitter shout out, and they did not back down from the challenge. In fact, that’s what attracted them to it. It’s on the backs of their hard work – and Amesh, Roger, Aaron and JoDee’s too, that makes us look like stars. Tons of other people helped this become possible so we’ll be shining a spotlight on them too as we continue to promote the game.

ND: Floor Kids really seemed to get some strong focus during Nintendo’s Nindies Summer Showcase back in August, and reception from the gaming media on the whole seemed pretty positive. How has it been working with Nintendo?

JJ: Nintendo has been amazing to work with. We really love them. When we went down to their Nindies at Night announcement back in August, we were treated so well. I think the spirit of their games which we grew up on, and the spirit of Floor Kids is pretty much in alignment and they recognized that and invited us to be one of their titles. It just felt right, made a lot of sense and was a dream come true. They’re just good people. And we put them in as crowd characters!

ND: With the game now out, what comes next? Other platforms? DLC?

BG: For sure DLC. We’ve already talked about it and have begun working on it. We’ll make an announcement soon. Outside of the games sphere, we have a vinyl album on the way, tour dates planned, artwork, posters, enamel pins, maybe even T-shirts!

ND: JonJon, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us today!
