With Halloween only a couple of days away, we thought it would be fitting to highlight a Halloween-flavored gaming tune in this week’s Track of the Week. There’s no shortage of spooky melodies to choose from, thanks to the wide range of Halloween-inspired video games on the market, from traditional horror franchises like Resident Evil to Nintendo’s own Luigi’s Mansion series, but the piece we ultimately decided on comes from a title that, at first blush, doesn’t bear any relation to the holiday…

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door may not be the first game that springs to mind when you think of Halloween, but it’s one that I’ll forever associate with the holiday, thanks in large part to Twilight Town. The scene of one of the game’s more unusual chapters, Twilight Town is a small hamlet nestled deep in the heart of Rogueport’s woods and blanketed beneath the faint, perpetual glow of dusk.

If the image of bare trees clawing at a twilit sky isn’t enough to conjure up thoughts of Halloween, the tune that plays while you’re in town certainly will be, a somber, almost waltz-like melody that drifts in and out of the background like the apparitions haunting Creepy Steeple. Together with the autumnal scenery and the unusual problem that’s befallen the townsfolk (who turn into pigs each time the Steeple’s bell tolls), Twilight Town evokes a whimsical, slightly macabre atmosphere that perfectly embodies the spirit of Halloween.
