8) World 4-1 (Super Mario Bros. 3)
Whether it’s called Big Island, Giant Land, or even Land of the Giants, the main thing to understand about the fourth world in Super Mario Bros. 3 is that things got huge. Mammoth. Gigantic! Arriving at world 4-1, players suddenly found themselves stomping on Goombas and Koopas the size of Mini Coopers, and smashing blocks that looked like refrigerator boxes. Showing off the extra oomph that the additional chips crammed into the SMB3 cartridge, 4-1 was an impressive display of giant characters that the NES didn’t often see. Though the enemies could all be dispatched as usual, there was still something more menacing about the inflated foes that made getting through the level tougher than it really should have been. Yes, giant Goombas still give me nightmares. Brrrrr…
Having only recently started Super Mario Galaxy 2, I don’t know how you can choose. Every level in this game feels so brilliant and original and purely entertaining… it’s literally a joy to play.
