Top Ten: Super Mario Stages

Mario’s top ten stages are better than most entire games. Come see which one is the greatest!

1) Grandmaster Galaxy (Super Mario Galaxy 2)

This is it. This is what a true Super Mario player lives for in a game. No give, no pat on the shoulder, no mercy. Grandmaster Galaxy remains the undisputed apex of platforming challenge. Taking everything from the main game and condensing it into a single gauntlet that required blistering precision to complete, Grandmaster Galaxy asked the player to be their best, and give a little more on top. Boys became men, girls became women, and, somewhere, Chuck Norris thought about weeping, as Nintendo put everyone who ever thought they were good at a Mario game on notice with this stage. Like Champion’s Road, Grandmaster Galaxy, when played right, demonstrates the pure harmony of movement that only the best of Mario players can muster. Every motion has to flow out of the player without a second’s hesitation, moves have to be thought out in advance, and, only then, will the game reward you with its final star. Pitch perfect.

What do you think, folks? There are so many stages across all the different Mario games that there’s no way we touched on all your favorites. Which level deserved mention? What memories do you have from your favorite Mario stage? Let us know in the comments!

Having only recently started Super Mario Galaxy 2, I don’t know how you can choose. Every level in this game feels so brilliant and original and purely entertaining… it’s literally a joy to play.
