8. Hotel Goomba – Mario Party 5

Type: Free-for-all minigame

Hotel Goomba, not to be confused with the god-awful CD-i game Hotel Mario, is one of the best free-for-all minigames in Mario Party 5. In this minigame, Goombas crowd rooms in a hotel, and the player must push them onto adjacent tiles to move them out of the way in order to reach the next floor. This makes each of the game’s three floors play out like mini puzzles, and the difficulty of each room increases as you rise higher up in the hotel.

While none of these puzzles are overly difficult in structure, the game challenges you to do it as fast as possible in order to beat your opponents. It is important to think each move through, because a player has a better chance of getting stuck every time they push a Goomba to another tile. In the event that there is nothing that can be done, the player must reset the current floor from the beginning, putting them at a serious disadvantage.

Oh, and the only way to push a Goomba in this minigame is to punch them in the face. The premise of this concept alone makes this minigame worthy of a top ten list!

I remember when the first Mario Party came out, Nintendo offered everyone the chance to get a glove to keep from burning holes into the palms of their hands. This series is always fun. Great picks!

I remember that all too well! The N64 control sticks were often huge victims of the original Mario Party minigames as well. I went through a couple of controllers just for Mario Party, and I have no regrets.

The blisters I got from the first Mario Party were kind of unbelievable in retrospect. I pretty much tore my hand apart playing some of those games.

Like Anthony, I regret nothing. :)

      Also, no Bumper Balls??

I know that feeling all too well, Marc!

Haha I love Bumper Balls, but I opted to take it out because I often got into stalemates when two players were left on the field. But, it’s definitely an awesome minigame :)
