3: Final Fantasy IV

“Zeromus! I can’t lose! I just…can’t…lose.”

At the end of Final Fantasy IV, it seems as though all is lost. The darkness has finally won out and the game is over. You have failed. Your party is dead and even a change of heart from Golbez hasn’t helped at all. You, the player, are sitting there, helpless, wondering if this is really happening.

Then it cuts to the tower where your remaining party members are, and the twins Palom and Porom ask if there’s anything they can do to help Cecil and their friends. The elder of Mysidia tells them to pray, and he calls upon the moon to help them out. Next thing you know and Cecil is up on his feet. He goes over to Golbez and gives him the crystal, and then he turns to Zeromus and tells him that he cannot give up. It’s not that he won’t give up, it’s that he can’t.

It then cuts to the battle screen with the four slain players and the severely injured Cecil standing before Zeromus. Two by two, all your previous party members give their powers over to the players. First, you see the twins as they heal Rydia and Rosa. Then, Yang and Cid who heal Kain and Edge. Finally you get FuSoYa and Golbez who heal Cecil and give him back the Crystal. The party is healed and they are back and better than ever before. Nothing is going to stop them now. They are ready to fight for the fate of the world and rid themselves of the evil that wants to destroy it.

The icing on the cake, however, is that playing all through this scene is the famous prologue theme, the one that’s made its way into almost every Final Fantasy game past and present. If that doesn’t make you want to stand up and cheer, then perhaps you need a soul transplant.
