4: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

“This isn’t the letter I wrote! This is Sophia’s handwriting!”

This is the only moment on this list that I’ll admit made me cry like a little girl while I was playing it. It was just so unexpectedly sweet, and it was also pretty uncommon for a puzzle game too. In the second installment of the Professor Layton series, the Professor and Luke are in possession of the Elysian Box, which was fabled to kill anybody who dared to open it. They head on over to the town of Folsense to investigate the box. Along the way, they stop at Dropstone where they meet Katia, whose grandmother Sophia had an interest in the box. Then they encounter the main antagonist, Anton, who is living pretty much in a delusion of sorts. Sophia, apparently, was Anton’s true love who left him for what seemed to be another man.

After much fighting and the revelation of the truth, we come to find out that Katia is actually Anton’s granddaughter and it was actually her mother was the reason Sophia left Folsense. Yes, Sophia was pregnant with Katia’s mother. Anton cannot believe this and feels guilty as the illusion shatters, and his true form as an old man is revealed. While the box hadn’t been solved yet, Professor Layton and Luke head to see Anton along with Katia. Anton gives them the necessary clue to help them solve the mystery of the Elysian Box, claiming that he wrote a letter to Sophia in the box when it ended up in Folsense. When they open it, they see a letter. People assume that it’s going to be his letter that Sophia never got.

But wait, what is this?! The letter was actually from Sophia! Cue the waterworks.

Here’s a guy who believed for years that the woman he loved had in fact left him for another man. While he had learned that he had a granddaughter, he still wasn’t sure what Sophia had thought of him. And now, a year after her death, he comes to find out that she had never stopped loving him. She always loved him and would continue to love him even in the afterlife. Anton then writes back and says that while he cannot wait to see her again, he believes that he has someone else that he must get to know before he goes there– Katia. And that was when I completely lost it. What can I say? I’m a sap.
