7: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

“You and your sister love this soup, don’t you? If you run out, I can make it for you any time you like.”

Link’s grandmother is officially the sweetest old lady in the entire world. She’s an excellent cook, a great caregiver, and the most selfless lady you could find on Outset Island. So when Link finds out she’s become sick with guilt and depression over Aryll’s kidnapping, there’s nothing, nothing, more heartbreaking.

But when you heal her with a fairy, she doesn’t scold Link for making her worry. She doesn’t even talk about how much she misses them. No, she apologizes for not doing enough. She apologizes and says she’s a terrible grandmother. At that point all I can think is “NO, YOU’RE NOT! YOU ARE THE BEST GRANDMOTHER EVER AND YOU DESERVE ALL THE PRIZES!” And that soup. Man, that soup is easily the greatest potion one could ask for, since it replenishes both your heart and magic meters.

After most of the vignettes with your grandmother, I know that I’m more inspired to beat the game and save the world. Unlike other Links in the past, this one has living family, and I don’t know about you guys, but how could you let down family? Especially with a grandmother as caring and as sweet as her?! Every time I hear from her or interact with her, it gives me the strength to carry on in the game.
