7. LostWinds
Developer: Frontier Development
Released: WiiWare (2008)
For all the hate that motion controls have gotten in the years since the launch of Wii, there are some developers who really know how to make it work. Enter Frontier Development, the geniuses behind LostWinds (and its sequel, LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias), a 2D platformer that fuses traditional platforming elements and motion controls. Players used the Wii Remote to manipulate wind powers that sent the main character, Toku, soaring through the air, and also solve environmental puzzles.
LostWinds was also remarkably pretty, rivaling many so-called AAA third-party titles that were released on Wii. The graphics were lush and detailed, and truly sucked the player into the game’s world. Like so many of the indie titles on this list, LostWinds also didn’t pander to the endless grit and gore of many contemporary titles, preferring instead to tell a tale with unique characters in a unique environment. Frontier Development brought WiiWare one of its earlier and greatest games with LostWinds.
Couldn’t agree more with number 2. It’s great! Just started playing Guacamelee! Great stuff :)
