The best underdog titles on Nintendo’s consoles!

Mario. Zelda. Call of Duty. Assassin’s Creed. Those are all names that anyone who marginally dabbles in the world of video games is familiar with. Blockbuster franchises have earned the gravitas and respect that comes with success, but for many gamers, it’s the titles that have no pedigree or devout following that are often the most appealing and fun. Ironically, Nintendo, with its stable of marquee series, has become home to a thriving indie gaming scene that would make even Apple blush.

Starting with WiiWare and DSiWare, Nintendo opened the door for many developers who normally would never have had a chance to get their games into the hands of players, and the industry is a better place for it. Now, with the Wii U and 3DS eShops continuing to be the proving grounds for the next generation of game developers, it’s a perfect time to sit back and bask in the successes of Nintendo’s virtual marketplaces. Let’s take a look at ten indie games that any gamer should make the time to discover!

Please note, I’ve excluded Level-5’s Guild series titles, as the far-from-indie developer served as producer on all those games (predominantly with a lot of established Japanese game makers, too). Wonderful as they are, they don’t quite fit in amongst these true indie darlings.
