7) House of the Dead: Overkill
Play it on: Wii
Dust off your Wii Zapper and prepare to play one of the best-looking (and most profanity-laden) Wii games ever made. The House of the Dead: Overkill is SEGA’s intense, violent, bloody love letter to horror fans. An on-rails shooter, Overkill controls like the classic light-gun arcade games The House of the Dead series is known for. What sets Overkill apart is an explosive narrative, intense gunplay, and a pulp aesthetic that really pushes Wii to its limits. This game isn’t shy about pushing the envelope, but if you can handle its bombastic attitude, Overkill is a great Halloween romp.
Overkill features the series’ standard zombie-killing action, but kicks it up a notch with sickeningly realistic dismemberment and gore splatter. Players can customize their arsenal via the in-game shop, which adds even more variety to the mayhem as the story progresses. Chaining kills helps stack combos, resulting in big scores and bigger thrills. Enemies are gruesome, in particular the bosses, who feature some of the best creature design in the game. Make no mistake, Overkill generates scares more through waves of enemies and the resulting adrenaline rush than hushed creeps through dimly lit corridors, but that will do little to impact your enjoyment. This game will get your blood pumping as easily as a slasher flick, and it might also spread a grin across your face, too!
Moon is my favorite DS game. Great recommendation.
Great list of games!
Dead Space: Extraction (Wii) was my October “scary game” of choice… and it succeeded in totally creeping me out more than once. Another great title for Nintendo horror fans to check out, even if Halloween has already gone by.
