4) Tetra
First Appearance : The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube, 2003)
Spoiler alert! Tetra is Princess Zelda. For those who first played Wind Waker back when it bowed on GameCube, however, it wasn’t totally obvious from the get-go that Tetra was indeed the Princess of Hyrule. A tomboy, scrappy and gruff, and roaming the seas as the leader of a gang of pirates, Tetra was extremely far removed from the demure Zelda that fans had grown accustomed to. After seeing multiple hints peppered throughout the adventure, when Tetra’s true identity was finally revealed, it felt like the culmination of a great journey, and remains one of the most compelling takes on the character to date.
